Childhood anxiety disorder?

My 3 year old literally ‘shuts down’ when she is not at home. We have been going to church for over 3 months and since the beginning, she will not go into the preschool room with her sister who is 5. She insists on staying with me. If someone she doesn’t know comes up and tries to talk to her, she screams and cries and covers her face. I am fearful of enrolling her in head start in the fall because I do not believe she will get on the bus, or even leave my side should I drive her to school. I have been researching SM and I think she may have it. My question is this, can my general practitioner diagnose this or does he have to send her to a child anxiety specialist? Do I even have to take her to my normal doctor or should I look for a specialist in my area? I thought about talking to first steps, as they help with developmental stages in children (she has already seen a speech therapist which helped her vocabulary grow – I quit having the therapist come out because once she began picking things up from the therapist, she just took off with it). The socialism thing really worries me though.

Your doctor might recommend a therapist so that she can talk to someone, but you don’t need a doctor’s recommendation to take her somewhere. You could find a child therapist on your own.

There are plenty of good counsellors out there who specialize in helping children with social disorders.

I have a 7 year old son with the same problem I take him to a psychiatrist once a month and also I take him to see a counselor weekly he is doing way better at it, but I can tell you this much in advance they are going to want to put her on a medicine. My son started this behavior when he was around your daughters age and they tried to put him on medicine but my wife at the time felt he was too young and refused it but when he turned five she felt he was old enough and the behavior wasn’t going to just go away on it own and since he has been on his meds now for 2 years and everything has been great he started wanting to sleep over at friends houses and has been active in sports and doing extremely better in school because in the beginning he would cry every time either of us left him at school and would tell the teacher he was sick so he could come home. he has made remarkable progress

    Good Luck

Wow, good question. I am alittle reluctant to comment because I am in no way a doctor. That being said in adulthood I was diagnoised with panic attacks and generalized anxiety disorder. Not to scare you or put ideas in your head but I was also diagnoised with bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder.

I do beleive I showed signs of it in childhood, it’s just no one really paid much attention to it. I think if I were you I would get as many opinions as possible before you decide on any course of treatment. See the GP, see the shrink, see the specialist, the councilers, therapists, etc. And keep doing your homework on the subject. I know it’s alot of work, but since your dealing with such a young child I would be extra careful.

I wish you the best with your problem. I hope you find the right kind of help.
